The legend hunter
Austria is a land of legends. Every region, every town - indeed almost every village - has some fabulous story to tell about eerie creatures, strange mandl'n or evil witches
and wizards. The exciting thing about these stories is that there is always a kernel of truth or at least a comprehensible explanation as to why they are anchored in the respective places.
Max Müller, alias "The legend hunter", has been on the road since fall 2023 to uncover the background. From the Arlberg to Lake Neusiedl, he delves into the archives of communities and churches, talks to chroniclers and scientists and searches for traces and evidence on site. Did the "Krapfenbäck Simale" from St. Veit an der Glan really exist?
What is the secret behind the "message of death" in Wals-Siezenheim? And what does the "Wachtkreuz" have to do with the fact that no proper carnival has been celebrated in Lermoos for centuries?
Many legends tell their truths and messages between the lines. And often the ravages of time make them difficult to understand. But that's exactly what the legend hunter is there for: to find out what historical reality the legend depicts and what the people of that time really wanted to tell.
